The Mother Tongue Department aims to:
Instill in MGS girls a passion for learning their Mother Tongue Language (MTL)
Develop confident and effective MTL communicators who are able to appreciate their cultural roots and connect with wider communities across Asia and the world.
The Mother Tongue Curriculum focuses on effective communication by building the fundamentals of language learning skills such as listening, reading, writing and speaking in our students. In order to cater to the different learning needs and interests of our students, we adopt a differentiated and learner-centred approach in the teaching of MTL. Students who are proficient and show strong interest in their MTL are offered Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) in Primary 5 where they continue to study MTL at a higher level.
The Mother Tongue Support Programme is also implemented at Primary 3-4 to provide a more structured and scaffolded learning pace for students who require a more customised approach to the learning of MTL.
Cultural awareness is integral to learning of the MTL. Our yearly Mother Tongue Fortnight Programme provides students with the exposure of the traditional cultures to build awareness of their own heritage and strengthen their cultural identity.
In MGS, teachers adopt a variety of pedagogical approaches such as e-pedagogy, role-play, drama, songs and competitions to enhance the teaching and learning of the MTL. There are also level programmes in the different MTL to create an environment where students can practise and use their MTL freely.
